History of Bantry Bay

Originally, the area was part of a larger tract of land known as “Botany Bay,” named for its use as a site where local plants were cultivated and studied. A Dr Lieschingdid botanical experiments here. However, the name was later changed to Bantry Bay, reflecting its Irish namesake.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Bantry Bay played a role in Cape Town’s coastal defence strategy. The British, who occupied the Cape Colony during this period, constructed fortifications and battery placements along the coast to protect against potential naval attacks. The remains of the Kloof Battery, one of the fortifications from the 18th century, can still be seen today, serving as a reminder of the area’s strategic importance.

The suburb began to develop into a residential area in the early 20th century. Its scenic location, sheltered from Cape Town’s infamous southeasterly winds, made it a desirable place to live.
