Doringbaai

History of Doringbaai

This village originally had an English name: “Thornbay,” It is a fishing village known for its crayfish industry. In the past, the bay served as an anchorage where supplies were stored before being transported to Vanrhynsdorp by camel. The town officially came into existence in 1925.

The old crayfish factory, which closed in the 1970s, now hosts an abalone farm. The site also features a wine-tasting facility and a restaurant called Fryers Cove Wines. This winery uses grapes from a vineyard located just 820 meters from the shoreline, making it the closest vineyard to the coast in the world.
