History of Mc Gregor

Mc Gregor named after a Scottish church pastor

This village was established in 1861 at the foot of the Renosterveld mountains and was originally called Lady Grey. In 1905, the name changed to McGregor in honor of Rev. Andrew McGregor, the Scottish pastor of the local church. The village retains its charm with well-preserved 19th-century buildings and a cohesive historical character.

Accessibility by road

McGregor sits amidst fertile land, which attracted farmers to the area in the 1700s. The village experiences a “little Karoo” climate, with hot summers, cold winters, occasional rain, and sometimes snow.

When the plots were sold, advertisements promised that the main road from Cape Town would pass through McGregor. However, this road never materialized, nor did another planned road crossing the Boesmanskloof to Greyton. As a result, the isolated village retained its peaceful charm.

Proclaimed in 1862, the village saw small plots allocated and by 1905, all the land had been bought. The irrigation system features a water channel from the town dam, passing by the houses at the edge of the street, with a channel running to each home.
