North Corner
Noordhoek means North Corner. Noordhoek Farm was proclaimed in 1743, by Governor-general Van Imhoff the governor-general of the Cape. He granted the land to Christina Diemer who married Frederik Rossouw and inherited the Farm ‘Zwaanswyk’, when he died. She also owned, ‘Imhoff’s Gift’ and a large piece of Land, in Simon’s Town. Noordhoek is situated just below Chapman’s Peak. The area was quite remote and inaccessible till the Ou Kaapse Weg was built in the 1960s. Previously the only access was by way of the Main road along the False Bay coast. The scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive, linking Hout Bay to Noordhoek was opened in 1923. Locals called it “Oom Izaksekop”. After Isaac de Villiers., a descendant of the Huguenots who arrived from France in 1687. The De Villiers family settled in the area in 1881.
Chapman’s Peak
Chapman’s Peak (Chapman’s Bay) was named after John Chapman. He was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy who had to search for water in the area when he came ashore in 1607. However, Jan Van Riebeek renamed it Houtbay 40 years later. Chapman’s name was then given the bay just south of it.
Ou Kaapse Weg is not so old, It is just the name given to the road over the mountains. Previously, it was just a track between Hout Bay and Kalk Bay on the other side of the ridge. This remoteness has resulted happily in the preservation of the rural atmosphere of the suburb
Middens and skeletons show that the first inhabitants of this area were Khoi nomads and Strandlopers who had been in the area for over 1000 years.
