Municipality; City of Cape Town
Area: 1.75 km2

This suburb was first established in 1968 for coloured people who had been removed from “white areas” like Simon’s Town, Noordhoek, Red Hill, and Glencairn. This was justified by the Group Areas Act of the apartheid government. Previously named Slangkop it was built on farmland and fynbos areas. The first resident moved into Ocean View on 1 August 1968. Since the government had removed the residents from their previous seaside homes, there is still much bitter resentment among many people. The community is made up of mixed races with echoes of Khoisan and other settler groups. There is an interesting melting pot of cultures and the atmosphere is vibrant and resilient.  a rich cultural life, with many local initiatives focused on arts, music, and community development. The population are mostly dependent on local industry and fishing.
