Gallery in Stellenbosch

The University Museum is based in the formerly Old Bloemhof School Building for Girls. It was built in 1907 and used as a school till 1986. The building was declared a National Monument in 1979. Sasol donated a substantial amount of money to restore and transform the building into a cultural centre. The museum opened its doors to the public in 1991. A Variety of permanent collections of paintings, graphic works, and sculptures, as well as an anthropological collection, are displayed. A cultural history section is also active in the Museum. Temporary art exhibitions which consist of national as well as international artists are present in the University Museum. There are also permanent exhibitions of visual art collections and anthropological and cultural-historical objects. The University of Stellenbosch, known affectionately as “Maties” is a world-renowned academic institution. The collections feature pieces related to South African history, foreign artist works while in the country, and many of South Africa’s most reputed artists. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum has a documented history of the university, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and graphics from the 19th and 20th centuries, and clothing, weaponry, and ritual objects from Southern, Central and Western Africa.
