Jonkershoek Nature Reserve

Jonkershoek Nature Reserve is a CapeNature nature reserve located approximately 10km south-east of the town of Stellenbosch

It is a valuable conservation area and is mainly covered in mountain fynbos, and has rare/endemic plant and animal species. Although oak trees are not indigenous, they have not been removed from the area as they have historical value. The valley has large pine plantations on property neighbouring the nature reserve. CapeNature has a programme in place to control the growth of hakea and other invasive alien plants that threaten the area’s precious fynbos.

The rugged Jonkershoek Mountains and valley nature reserve in Stellenbosch. The area is rich in plant and animal life. Jonkershoek offers budget-friendly adventures.  You will also find some great picnic spots in the reserve.

There are some great hikes and trails in this reserve, some quite short easy trails too. On the Tweede Waterval and Panoramic Circuit hiking trails, you will pass three waterfalls. You can swim under two of them. There are directions to follow on a path to the waterfalls. The first is 500 metres into the trail. The second one takes a bit of a climb and the third is at the end of the trail when you will need to return on the same path as this is not a circular route.

There are also several biking trails around the reserve. The trails range in difficulty, The routes are marked and colour-coded so riders can decide which is the best route for them. Biking however does involve a small extra cost.
