Tidal pool in Hermanus

Fick’s Pool is situated below Marine Drive. It is a historical site in Hermanus that has been in existence for nearly 90 years. It comprises a narrow inlet from the open sea to a sheltered cove. Fick’s Tidal Pool in Hermanus is surrounded by rocks. This spot overlooks the ocean. It is an ideal summer venue for a swim at sunset. The closeby restaurant has wooden decks that surround the pool. The pool is shallow. There is marine life to see in the deeper sections. Coastal birds also visit the pool. During the season (June to November), you’ll be able to see whales in the sea beyond the pool.

Mr J J Fick, was the principal of the only government school in Hermanus during the 1920s and early 1930s. He lived in a house on one of the sites above the inlet, then named the ‘gat’. It was during the Great Depression and times were tough. There was little available to entertain young people during weekends and holidays. While there are great beaches entertainment in the town itself was limited. So in the early 1930s, a concrete wall was built across the opening of the cove, creating a tidal swimming pool
