The Newlands Spring

Spring water in Newlands

There is a natural spring in Newlands, just behind the Newlands swimming pool near Dean Street shopping centre. High-quality water flows down from the mountain slopes. To this date, the water has been used in the brewing industry. The first licensed brewery in South Africa was established at Papenboom in1694. Today Newlands Spring Brewing Company uses the water for craft beer. The spring is open to the public seven days a week from 5.00 am to 9.00 pm. The water here has also been used to power water mills since the mid1800s. While the water is clear, it is not treated and there is no guarantee that it is safe for drinking.
