South African Houses of Parliament in Caoe Town

The Houses of Parliament building within “The company’s garden has three main sections. The original building is designed by Charles Freeman in a Neoclassical style with Cape Dutch features, Corinthian porticoes, and a huge dome. It was completed in 1884 with additions in the 1920s and 1980s.   It includes the Library of Parliament.  Unfortunately,  the foundations were miscalculated so Charles Freeman was dismissed and replaced by Henry Greaves, who oversaw the building until it was completed in 1885. The new House of Assembly was designed by Sir Herbert Baker.  The building has been declared a National Heritage Site by the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) and has been given grade 1 national heritage status which is the highest grade set by SAHRA.
