Van Plettenberg Beacon
Claim to Plettenberg Bay
This beacon was erected to claim possession of the area by Governor Joachim Baron van Plettenberg in 1778. When he arrived at this bay it was called Bahia Formosa (Beautiful Bay as named by early Portuguese explorers) The stone indicated that the bay would thereafter belong to the Dutch East India Company. He had visited several outposts at the time. This one was named after him as Plettenberg Bay from November 1778
