Tienie Versveld wildflower reserve

Wildflowers near Darling

The Tienie Versveld Wildflower garden is 20 hectares of land that has never been ploughed and therefore there is a mass display of Sandveld flowers during the annual flower season. The reserve is part of a farm that was donated to the National Botanical Society of South Africa by  Marthinus (Tienie) Versfeld (known locally, obviously, as Oom Tienie). Tienie Versveld reserve is most well known for its bulbs, and the reserve is very popular during the flower season.

Within the reserve are the graves of Marthinus and his wife Beatrice (known as Baby). Marthinus’s sister, Muriel, was one of the founding members of the Darling Wildflower Association.

The reserve is quite swampy and it is recommended you wear good shoes. It is great for birdwatching too as there are masses of birds in the area.
