Mamre Heritage walk
Tori Oso Is the local coffee shop. This restaurant was originally “The Old Shop”. Start your walk from here.
Turn right and right again. In front of you will be the mill This used to be a horse-powered mill, but it was changed into a water mill in 1839.
Next to the parking lot is the Lobensaal. With the Lobensaal on your right continue down the road. The parsonage will be on your left.
This is the oldest building in the settlement and it dates back to 1679. Willem Van Der Stel came to Grone Kloof to establish a military outpost. The tree in front of it is 150 years old.
On your right you will see the Bakhuisie which was built in 1700.
Opposite, a bit further on is the church, this church is the 5th oldest in South Africa
Diagonally opposite the church is the school which was built in 1876.

Turn left walking past with the church on your left. The place of the slave tree will be on your right.
Continue to the end of the road and turn left. Follow this road till you see the “Long House” which dates back to 1697 This building served as barracks for VOC soldiers. The VOC wanted to keep the peace between the locals and farmers who had been permitted to graze their cattle.
Behind the “Long house” is the hill where the cemetery is placed, this dates back to 1880.
Return to the restaurant for some refreshments.
