The Sonderend River

The perennial 170 km long Sonderend River which rises in the Riviersonderend mountains, is a main tributary of the Breede River. Willem ten Rhyne visited the Cape in 1673.  He referred to the river as “sine fine flumen” (Latin for “endless river”). In 1707, Jan Hatogh, a horticulturist for the Dutch East India Company, called the river the “Kantdydnn” from the Hessequa “Kamma-kan Kamma”, meaning “water, endless water” or “endless river”.

The largest dam on this river is the Theewaterskloof Dam
