The Steenbras River

The Steenbras River mouth is situated at 34° 12’S; 18° 49’E between the coastal towns of Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els. The river is dammed twice at the upper and the lower Steenbras dams.

Both the river and dam are named after the steenbras which is a South African fish.  The total length of the Steenbras River from its mouth to its origin in the Hottentots Holland Mountains is about 17km long. The Steenbras River catchment area is estimated to be about 70 km2.

Crystal Pools hike along this river is a very popular and easy climb to a series of mountain pools. This hike is within a beautiful Valley known as the Steenbras River Gorge. It officially forms part of the Steenbras Nature Reserve. The hike follows the Palmiet River up the gorge.
