Hanover Park was established in 1969 and it started as smallholding. These were later occupied by many people as a result of the “Group Areas Act”. Coloured families who were moved from Newlands, Claremont and District Six were relocated into rental accommodation. This was provided by the council. The residences mainly consisted of two-story and three-story blocks. The disruption contributed to the destabilization of communities and the consequent increase of gang-based violence. Since then shacks have been built behind the rental units using utilities connected to the existing buildings. Toilet facilities are limited in these areas.
The postal codes are 7780 (street) and 7782 (boxes)
