Brooklyn

History of Brooklyn

Brooklyn is a suburb on the banks of the Black River, North of Maitland. It lies just West of the Ysterplaat airforce base.
The original farm was called ‘d`Yzere Plaat’,(Iron Plate) a hay Farm that belonged to J. P. Eksteen. The Ysterplaat airfield was originally a civilian airfield known as Maitland Aerodrome. As far back as 1929 African Air Transport operated here. Post the outbreak of the Second World War AAT moved to Tempe and the airfield was taken over by the South African Air Force. In the first year since the SAAF took over 790 aircraft were assembled here in Brooklyn. Ysterplaat was upgraded to an Air Force Base in 1968.

The SA Air Force began what was then known as the SAAF Diamond Mail Service in 1925. At the request of the Department of Mines, the SAAF instituted regular mail flights between Maitland and Alexander Bay. ‘Union Airways’, was started by  Major A.M. Miller. It began operating an airmail service in 1927 that used the airfield at Ysterplaat before the operations were moved to Wingfield about 2 years later.
