Crossroads

History of crossroads

The area of Crossroads was first settled in the 1970s. Workers at a farm in the area were told to leave the premises and go settle at the “Crossroads” They built shanty homes and established a community. By 1977 crossroads was home to 18000 people. Here at Crossroads people who previously lived in overcrowded hostels in Gugulethu moved to the area and built individual homes, but the government considered the settlement to be temporary. Orders to move and dismantle the shacks were given in 1975. However, these orders were opposed and ignored and by 1978 the government was compelled to recognize the area, and rudimentary water supplies and refuse removal services were supplied.
