De Kelders, which means” the caves or the Cellars” in Dutch, refers to the many caves found along the rugged limestone cliffs that line the coastline. These caves have historical and archaeological significance, as they were once inhabited by the Khoisan people. Some of the caves still contain ancient artefacts and rock paintings, offering a glimpse into the area’s prehistoric past.

The area is renowned for being one of the best whale-watching spots in the world. Every year, from June to December, southern right whales migrate to the waters off De Kelders to calve and nurse their young. The cliffs of  provide a perfect vantage point for watching these majestic creatures up close, often just meters from the shore. In addition to whales, the area is home to a variety of marine life, including dolphins, seals, and a rich diversity of seabirds.

The village is also famous for the crayfish festival and the Perlemoen which is farmed at Dangerpoint. The settlement is famed for its seafood. The De Kelders cave is the only coastal freshwater cave and is a safe swimming area.
