Ebenhaeser was established in 1831 by a German immigrant by the name of Wurmb when he built a station for the Rhenish missionary society. It was founded to provide a permanent settlement for the indigenous people and freed slaves who worked in the area. The mission aimed to convert the local population to Christianity and provide them with education and agricultural training. The name “Ebenhaeser” comes from the Hebrew word “Ebenezer,” meaning “stone of help,” reflecting the missionary origins and the spiritual foundation of the community.
The settlement is situated in a semi-arid region, characterized by its rugged landscapes, sandy soils, and the Olifants River, which plays a crucial role in supporting agriculture in the area. The river provides essential water resources for irrigation, allowing the cultivation of crops such as grapes, citrus fruits, and vegetables. The economy of the area is primarily based on agriculture. Many residents are involved in farming activities, focusing on both subsistence farming and commercial agriculture.
The postcode for Ebenhaeser is 8149 (Streets and Boxes)
