Hotagterklip is a small historic village located near the coastal town of Struisbaai. The name “Hotagterklip” is derived from the Afrikaans phrase “hottentot after die klip,” which roughly translates to “Hottentot behind the rock,” referencing the Khoisan people who once inhabited the area and the large rock formations nearby.

Hotagterklip is known for its well-preserved traditional fishermen’s cottages which were restored in the 1990s. They are characteristic of the architecture in this part of the Western Cape. These whitewashed, thatch-roofed cottages date back to the 19th century and have been declared national monuments, reflecting the village’s cultural and historical significance. Some of the cottages are used as holiday homes, They offer a glimpse into the lifestyle of the early settlers who relied on fishing as their primary means of livelihood.

The village is located near the Agulhas Plain, an area known for its rich biodiversity and proximity to the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas. This region has a long history of maritime activity, with the nearby coastline being notorious for shipwrecks due to treacherous waters.

The UNESCO Cape Floral Region protected area is nearby.
