This suburb is named after the anti-apartheid activist who became the minister of housing in the ANC-led government after 1994. It is a small township which began in 2006 as an orderly working-class suburb. The planners aimed to replace the shack dwellings in the area with RDP (reconstruction and development programme) houses. However, more shacks have been constructed around the houses and the area is now indistinguishable from an informal settlement. However, it consists of a mix of formal and informal housing, with a range of community amenities such as schools, clinics, and recreational facilities. Despite its development to improve living conditions, the area still faces several challenges, including overcrowding, limited access to essential services, unemployment, and crime.
Efforts to improve living conditions have been ongoing, with various government and non-governmental organizations working on initiatives to upgrade housing, provide better infrastructure, and support social services. Community-driven projects also aim to address some of the socio-economic challenges, fostering a sense of resilience and solidarity.
