Kleinbaai was originally inhabited by the Khoikhoi people before European settlers arrived. Dutch explorers and settlers first recorded the region in the 17th century. It developed as a fishing community in the 19th century. The local economy has traditionally been centered around fishing and maritime activities.

This is a small town on the Danger Point peninsula with a natural harbour. It is where boats launch for trips to Dyer Island. The seal population attracts sharks and is where the famous shark cage trips happen.
