Kleinmond is a small coastal town. The name means small mouth and this refers to the mouth of the Bot River lagoon. The town is popular with holidaymakers and the economy of the town survives on tourism. There are remains of kitchen middens dating back 1000s of years which prove the earliest inhabitants were probably Strandlopers. More evidence of this has been found in nearby mountain caves.
The Koggelberg mountains helped shape the history of Kleinmond where the seemingly impenetrable mountains were a barrier between the new Cape colony and the area. It served as a refuge for many runaway slaves, some criminals and what was left of Khoisan tribes.
In 1739 Andries Grove was granted grazing land here, but other inhabitants were few and far between. Wildlife was therefore plentiful plenty of hyenas, bontebok, buffalo, zebra and eland roamed freely in the area.

The first fishing community began in the mid-1800s with a fishing settlement at Jogensklip. This is where the  harbour is now. In 1948 the first village management board was established and the harbour was declared as an industrial area in 1954. However, development only really took off when the roads were tarred in 1966.

The licence plate prefix in Kleinmond is CAM and the postcode is 7195 (Streets and Boxes)
