The Lakeside and Zandvlei wetland which links to the Zandvlei estuary is surrounded by, mostly residential urban development, The total catchment area for Zandvlei is 92 square kilometres but the original wetland area has been much reduced. The development which began with the arrival of the Dutch East India Company has unfortunately impacted negatively on the area. As far back as 1673, a cattle post was established at the edge of the vlei. A railway bridge was constructed in 1882. Furthermore, dredging of the area has damaged or obliterated much of the wetland.
