Theatre on The Bay

Performance Art Theatre

The theatre on the Bay building was constructed between 1899 and 1900, originally serving as a key part of a power station and tramshed, it played a vital role in powering the city’s burgeoning tram system. By the 20th century, Cape Town’s tram network was essential for transport, and the building was integral to that system.

However, by the late 1970s, the building was no longer needed as the tram system no longer ran. The Camps Bay Operatic and Dramatic Society transformed the building into a place for entertainment. In May 1979, the premises officially became the Alvin Cinema. For almost a decade, the Alvin Cinema was a popular destination, particularly because of its intimate atmosphere and unique setting.
In January 1988 renowned South African theatre producer Pieter Toerien saw an opportunity to transform it into a dedicated theatre.
After undergoing extensive renovations, the theatre officially opened its doors in 1989. Toerien’s Theatre on the Bay quickly became a landmark for live performances in South Africa.
In 2017, the theatre underwent further renovations to update its facilities and enhance the audience experience. These updates ensured that the Theatre on the Bay could continue offering world-class productions while maintaining the charm and intimate atmosphere that have made it a favourite among both locals and tourists.
