Bonnievale Museum

Community museum

Bonnievale Museum is a small museum where you will learn a lot about the history of this town and the people who have lived here. It is full of antiques and collectibles gathered from residents. There is a little coffee shop there where you can enjoy homemade cakes and a cuppa.

The museum is housed in an old church. The church was built by Christopher Rigg who was one of the founders of Bonnievale. After Christopher and his wife lost two daughters in infancy, they had a third daughter who contracted meningitis at age 7 and also died. Before passing away she asked her father to build a small church. He fulfilled her wish. They used only the best materials. The door was imported from Zanzibar. The stone came from the surrounding mountains and the roof is solid lead. The tiles came from Italy. The church was used less and less and it became somewhat derelict. It was restored by the municipality in 1977. The safe on the porch has never been opened as the key has been long lost.
