Bird Island Nature Reserve
Bird Island is 3 hectares in size and is connected to the Mainland by a Dike. The Island is an important nesting and rest area for Cormorants and Cape Fools (Morus capensis). A small group of penguins have also settled there. South African Fur Seals are found on the seaward side. This protected area is managed by Cape Nature. Visitors can see the birds up close, they are used to visitors. You can experience direct contact with the birds where you can watch their courtship. Thousands of Birds, however, do make a very loud noise and they also produce large amounts of fresh Guano. You can visit the Guano museum in the new visitor centre where there is also a Coffee Shop, an aquarium and a small penguin pool.
