Blombos Cave

Ancient dwelling place near Stillbaai

The Blombos cave in the Langeberg Mountain Range is an important archaeological site. It is situated within a private nature reserve. Unfortunately, this reserve is not open to the public. The archaeologists who worked on the dig have found what seems to point to cognitive thinking, symbolism, and evidence of technological advancement in the form of the manufacture of composite tools. The cave was occupied about 100,000 years ago. Excavations began in 1992 and work is ongoing. The area was declared to be a provincial heritage site in 2015. There is evidence of body decoration in the form of beads made from shells.
While the site is closed to the public, there is a small museum in Stillbaai  “Blombos Museum of Archaeology” Here visitors can explore some of the fascinating things that were found at the site.
