Bot River and Bot River Estuary
The Bot river arises at Theewaterskloof and the Swart River joins it close to the Wildekrans wine estate. It empties into the sea at Fisherhaven at the Bot River Estuary. This is a relatively shallow estuarine lake/lagoon, roughly 7 km long and about 2 km at its widest, and is part of the Bot-Kleinmond Estuarine System. It became a Ramsar site wetland in 2017. The Rooisand Nature Reserve occupies around 60% of the western frontage of the lagoon. The lagoon is a prime bird-watching spot in the Overberg. It is incorporated into the Rooisands Nature Reserve, part of the Kogelberg Biosphere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is a bird hide and walkways create accessibility for all. The habitat is a mix of open water, lagoon edge, marsh, and coastal thicket.
The Bot River wine ward covers the area from the Bot River Lagoon up into the foothills of the Groenlandberg and Babylonstoren mountains. It forms part of the agricultural transition zone of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.
