Buffeljagsrivier
Buffeljagsrivier, the name means “buffalo hunt” in Afrikaans This river originates where two other rivers meet, The Grootvadersbos River (Grandfather’s Woods) and the Tradou River. The confluence is close to Suurbraak. The river flows into the Buffeljags Dam and then heads south to join the Breede River
The name originates from the late 1800s when Governor Hendrick Swellengrebel’s son visited the area. It is said that he shot the last buffalo that roamed the area. Sad claim to fame to be sure.
There is a thriving farming community along the river with a wide variety of crops and animals being farmed. The area is fertile, and vegetables, citrus, milk and cheese, lavender, and peppers are produced. The Buffeljagsdam, at the foot of the Langeberg mountains, provides water all year round for the farms in the area.
