Cape Town Railway Station
The first railway station in Cape Town was a wooden structure that was built in 1861. It was located near where the Golden Acre shopping centre is today.
Original station
In 1875 construction of a large stone building to serve as the central station was commissioned by Cape Prime Minister John Molteno. The railway network was expanding rapidly. The site selected was at the bottom of Adderley Street. Â The new station was big enough for the increasing number of train platforms needed. The station was also the headquarters for the new Cape Government Railways. Alterations and improvements have been made over the most recent upgrade to the station complex was part of the preparations for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
