De Waal Drive now known as Philip Kgosana Drive

In the early 1920s, Sir Nicolas Fredrick De Waal, The first administrator of the Western Cape, ordered the construction of a high-level road to link the upper part of the City Bowl with the Southern Suburbs. The roadway was called which was De Waal Drive. It has now been renamed Philip Kgosana Drive. Philip Kgosana, a member of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) risked his life and took a stand against the apartheid regime and unjust government pass laws march along the road to Parliament in 1960, He was arrested and later fled into exile.
