In the Swartberg mountains is the Die Aap private nature reserve and farm Lodge, which dates back to 1825. The building has been beautifully restored and modernized. This lodge is within the private nature reserve.
The 800 hectare Die Aap Private Nature Reserve is alongside the huge 121 000 hectares Groot Swartberg Nature Reserve which was declared a Cape Floral World Heritage Site in 1997. The reserves are home to hundreds of Cape fynbos plant species with different plant biomes (succulent karoo and Cape thicket). There is also a lot of indigenous game roaming the open veld. Ask about the guided tours to hidden gorges with access to the well-preserved Buchman Caves dating back thousands of years.
