Die Plaat
Beach between Hermanus and De Kelders
Die Plaat means ‘the sheet’ referring to the long coastal plain that drops considerably just offshore. De Plaat stretches from Hermanus to De Kelders. There are long stretches of pristine white sandy beaches, caves, and massive sand dunes. The entry point to Die Plaat at Gansbaai is within the Walker Bay Nature Reserve. It is quite isolated and is at the end of a very long walk if you are not driving there. There is an admission fee to the reserve as well as strict entry and exit times. Swimming is only advised on the sheltered first beach as strong rip currents can be encountered in the open waters. Surfing, horse riding, and hiking are other activities enjoyed here.
