Floriskraal dam
Floriskraal Dam on the Buffels River is a combined gravity and buttress-type dam built primarily for irrigation in 1957. The wall of the dam is 27 metres high and 192 metres wide. It has a capacity of 50 334 000 m³ and a surface area of 744.7 ha. In 1981 heavy rainfall and floods wrecked Laingsburg as a result of the collapse of the original Floriskraal Dam wall. This is what caused most of the damage. The dam was built primarily for irrigation. Bass fishing is popular at this very large dam. There are three rivers that meet a few kilometres north of Laingsberg. The Buffels River, the Wilgehout River and the Baviaans River. These were all swollen with such a significant amount of rain, which is unusual for the usually dry area.
