Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve

Reserve in Franschoek

Nestled in the Franchhoek mountains, Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve offers beautiful hiking trails, spectacular views and diverse plant life.

Cat’s Pass Trail

This 5-hour trail is fairly challenging and steep. It is not recommended for children or the unfit,  It covers a distance of 10.5 kilometres.

Centuries ago migrating elephants and other game cut a track through the terrain. This track was used by the first settlers to access the interior over the mountains. There are several historical sites along the way. The Jan Joubert gat Bridge, The Cat’s Toll House and, The Old Outspan.  This was a resting place for travellers and their span of oxen. The reserve is part of the Boland Biosphere Reserve which was declared by UNESCO. See fynbos and many birds while hiking this trail.
