Heerenlogement cave
This cave, The Herenlogement ( gentleman’s lodging) on the slopes of the Langeberg mountains near Clanwilliam has been inhabited by people for Millennia. Long before settlers arrived in the CapeKhoi Khoi people used it for shelter.
Simon Van der Stel visited the cave on his way to Namaqualand to inspect copper mines.
Since Jan Danckert was first shown the cave by locals in 1660 when he and a group of settlers were investigating the areas to the North of Cape Town visitors on various expeditions have stayed over and all painstakingly engraved their names in the rock walls of the cave. There is a comprehensive record of the people who visited the Herenlogement.
The cave was warm and dry with space to keep the horses sheltered. A bonus is the freshwater spring close by.
