Hike to Elephants eye
Elephant’s eye is a cave on the side of a mountain that seems to resemble the head of an elephant. The cave is placed where the eye would be. The easiest route to Elephant’s Eye starts at Silvermine Nature Reserve. The advantage is that a large part of the climb can be done by car over Ou Kaapse Weg. Another route begins at the Tokai arboretum but this is a bit more difficult. You will need to pay the conservation fee at the Silvermine main gate. From there drive a few km. At this point, you will find the only ablution facility on the hike. The hike is well signposted. During the hike, you will pass indigenous fynbos fields and proteas in bloom on manageable inclines. In other parts of the reserve are opportunities for caving, rock climbing, and mountain biking. Lookout and Elephant’s Eye are found on the slopes of Constantiaberg and offer excellent views of the Cape Flats and False Bay. You will pass some pine trees, the Prinzkasteel Stream, and a fire lookout stone hut for the foresters. When you get to the cave, you will find the roof of the cave is partly covered in green ferns. It’s mystical. From here, you can view the dark green forests and vineyards of Tokai and Constantia.
