Hout Bay Beach

Safe family beach

The Hout Bay beach is a kilometre-long white sandy stretch. The protected bay is safe for swimming and suntanning, There is room for a game of beach volleyball, touch rugby, beach cricket, jogging, or flying a kite.  The Hout Bay River cuts through the middle of this beach after meandering from the top of Table Mountain down to the Hout Bay wetlands and beach estuary.

.Dogs are allowed on leashes, but may run free in the middle section, however, they are not allowed near the harbour. Horse riding is also allowed west of the Disa River mouth, and only before sunrise. Fishing is allowed on the condition that you have a permit. Swimming is safe and lifeguards are on duty.

 

Then, of course, there is Dungeons. This is South Africa’s most notorious wave. Firstly in order to get there, you’ll need to charter a boat from the harbour and a tow-in to catch it. Then, you’ll be at the mercy of the wave. The waves happen only during a cold temperature storm, but it is classed among the world’s “big wave” venues. The 15-30 foot swell at Dungeons breaks over a shallow reef on the seaside of Hout Bay. For the bravest surfers only.

Waves of even up to 60ft have been ridden here, Recommended for experienced surfers only, Dungeons surf only works during certain times of the year, but when the waves are pumping you will see spectators watching the action from boats.
