Jaftha’s Flower Farm

Fresh cut flowers are picked daily in Constantia

Jaftha’s Flower Farm is on the Spanschemat river in the Constantia valley. The story of the farm dates back to the 1800s. The community in the area grew flowers and strawberries for generations. This is where the name of the road Strawberry Lane originated. Back in the day, the farmers would rise before dawn and head for Adderly Street with strawberries and violets. The farmers were mainly “coloured” and were forcibly removed from their leased land and relocated to Grassy Park in the 1960s. This was because of the Group Areas Act. Today a simple sign advertising “Fresh flowers cut daily” signals to customers who visit from all over the peninsula.
