Art gallery and museum in Riversdale

The Julius Gordon Africana Centre in (Versfeld House)shows the history of our country and its culture portrayed in art. From cave paintings thousands of years old to the colonial renditions of the South Africa of the 19th century.  Modern pieces portray the colourful vibe that now characterises our country. Art preserves our identity and tells the story of the land.  The gallery houses the largest collection of Thomas Bowler paintings in South Africa and was built in 1880.

There are works by Jan Volschenk and Johannes Meintjes (both originally from Riversdale), Irma Stern, Pierneef, Maggie Loubser, Gregoire Boonzaaier, Erich Mayer, Terence McCaw, Ruth Prowse, and Pieter Wenning.

Also on display are Khoisan rock paintings and stone implements, and Africana furniture of the region telling the story of Riversdale. Modern man (Homo sapiens) lived in and around the Riversdale area from as far back as 130 000 years ago.
