Knersvlakte Nature Reserve

A myriad of succulent species near Vanrhynsdorp

The Knersvlakte Nature Reserve is in the Matzikama region. It covers an area north of Vredendal and Vanrhynsdorp. The reserve, which was established on 24 September 2014, is owned by the South African branch of the Worldwide Fund for Nature and managed by the provincial conservation agency Cape Nature.

The Knersvlakte is one of the richest and most diverse succulent regions in the world. Its miniature succulents come in all shapes and sizes and are known colloquially by names like baba-boudjies, krapogies and vingers-en-duimpie

This nature reserve between Vanrhynsdorp and Nuwerus is home to of 1/3 of the world’s total dwarf succulent’s species.
