Leiwater dam
The leiwater dam at Montagu is a wonderful birding area that is a unique bird watching site in an urban setting. The dam is surrounded by trees and reedbeds and the vegetation supports a wide range of breeding and foraging birds. It has become an international birding attraction. There are 18 species of indigenous birds that make their homes there including Sacred Ibis, Herons, Cormorants, Egrets, Shrikes, and Weavers. 52 visiting species have also been identified. A bird hide has been recently constructed and funded by the community.
A Leiwater is water channeled from a source such as a river or a dam, through canals or pipes to supply irrigation water to properties in a town or farming community. The water is directed by a system of valves, taps, and sluice gates. These are manually operated. Most of these systems, are gravity fed.
The dam serves different streets in the town. Each year maintenance is carried out and the dam is emptied. Excess watergrass and reeds are removed. Debris is cleaned from the outlet pipes and repair valves. Some water is always left at the bottom of the dam for the frogs and fish.
