Rhodes’cottage museum
This is a small seaside cottage where Cecil John Rhodes spent his last days. Rhodes was an industrialist, imperialist, mining magnate, politician, and philanthropist. There is a lot to see if you are interested in Rhodes and Cape history.
He bought the property in 1899. It is also where he died in 1902 at age 49. Rhodes was a colonial empire builder, and Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896.
Rhodes was a staunch believer in British colonialism and used his influence to colonize Mashonaland, (Rhodesia) He was instrumental in bringing almost one million square miles of Africa under British domination.
He was also a co-founder of the De Beers diamond mining company. By age 35 he controlled the largest diamond mining and trading companies in the whole of South Africa.
In 1938 Rhodes Cottage was declared a National Monument. The Rhodes Cottage Museum was opened by the Mayor of Cape Town on 4 July 1953
There is a Tea Room Consisting of two rooms, a Garden Room, and a Reading Room– containing over 400 books on Early Cape History, as well as books on Early Rhodesia and a small bookshop open TUESDAY TO SUNDAY 10- 3 PM. ph: 021 3005727
