Noordhoek common

Parkspace in the South Peninsula

The Noordhoek Common is a public open space that is community-maintained. Great care is taken to conserve its natural heritage and peaceful, village-green atmosphere

The common consists of three properties. The one on the Eastern side was owned by Walter Huskinson. This area included the Shady Oaks Caravan Park. The North West section belonged to the Goodman sisters. In 1982 John Wiley bought the estate and transformed it into De Goode Hoop Estate. As part of the development, he gave property to the Noordhoek Pony Club, later the Common Riders Association. Permission was granted to hold shows on the common.

The common supports a diverse ecosystem with a variety of fynbos species and also many small endemic wildlife such as dassies and mongoose. Birdwatchers will enjoy the area, there are wild peacocks, guinea fowl, suricats, and Egyptian Geese. You will also see some farm animals in and around the common such as horses, pigs, cows, hens, ducks, geese and rabbits.

The common features hiking trails Mountain bike trails and guided horse riding trails. There are designated picnic areas.  The closest facilities are at the Noordhoek farm village. Dogs are allowed but please be a responsible dog owner.
