Overseers cottage
The Overseers cottage is a stone and corrugated iron structure on Table Mountain at 760m. It is 12 minutes from Kasteelspoort, It is close to de Villiers Dam on the Back Table Jeep Track. The cottage was built for the engineer who oversaw the building of the Woodhead and hely Hutchinson reservoirs. In 1904 after the completion of the dams, the building was going to be demolished but the Mountain Club of South Africa negotiated a lease with the City Of Cape Town. They paid one pound per year until it was decided that collecting this money cost more than it was worth.
The building is now managed by SANParks. It has been stylishly renovated to comfortably accommodate up to 16 people. The hut is a well-equipped self-catering venue. There is hot water from a gas geyser, fridge, and stove but there is no electricity. There are two, four-sleeper bedrooms and four, two-sleeper bedrooms. The views over False Bay and the Southern suburbs are spectacular. Star gazing is also fantastic from this interesting venue.
Scout Hut and the Cape Province Mountain Club Hut are also nearby.
