Walker Bay Nature Reserve
Walker Bay Nature Reserve is made up of five areas located on the coast between Hermanus and Cape Agulhas
Coastal and marine life is abundant and it is known as one of the best spots in South Africa to see whales from the shore. Every year, hundreds of southern right whales gather in the sheltered bay to breed and calve their young.
It is also historically significant, with records of Middle Stone Age people (65 000 to 85 000 years ago) living in Klipgat Cave. There is also evidence that Khoi and San people lived in the area about 2 000 years ago. The bay itself is a marine protected area in which most boating and fishing activity is prohibited.
Walker Bay has a cool-climate that produces some of South Africa’s greatest wines. The marine environment and Antarctic currents cool the long hot summer which delays grape ripening. The wines from this region have great fruit concentration and natural acidity. The region is best known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay
Gansbaai, on the bay’s shores, has also become famous for great white shark diving.
