Paarl Arboreum
The Paarl Arboretum is situated on the eastern bank of the Berg River. It is 2.8 km long and occupies approximately 31 ha. The area is divided into 6 “continents” The trees and shrubs are grouped according to their continents of origin.
The Arboreum was inaugurated in 1957 at the suggestion of the then Town Treasurer of Paarl, Mr A E Short. The Paarl Arboreum was opened later that year by Prof H B Rycroft, then Director of the National Botanical Gardens.
In 1987 during the Paarl 300 Festival, the Arboretum was fully opened to the public and it is now a space where runners, MTB cyclists, and dog owners are encouraged to responsibly utilize the space. It has been identified as a ‘Green Gateway’ with the potential to connect people and nature to promote education for sustainability.
