Paradise cottage

Old ruin in Newlands forest

Deep in Newlands Forest, you can see what is left of a little stone cottage and garrison. It was built by the Dutch East India Trading Company. The cottage once belonged to the Master Woodcutter of the Dutch East India Company.  It later briefly belonged to Lady Anne Barnard, she and her husband used it as a getaway. All that is left of it is a stone wall, practically hidden in the undergrowth. This cottage was known as Paradijs or Paradise. A small garrison of soldiers was also stationed in the area. They were in the outbuilding a little further down the slope.
